General information
Ortho Tri-Cyclen (ethinyl estradiol and norgestimate) contains a combination of female hormones that prevent ovulation (the release of an egg from an ovary). Ortho Tri-Cyclen also causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. It is used as contraception to prevent pregnancy. It is also used to treat severe acne.
Directions
Take Ortho Tri-Cyclen exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Use your first pill on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after your period begins. Take one pill every day at the same time. The 28-day birth control pack contains seven 'reminder' pills to keep you on your regular cycle. Your period will usually begin while you are using these 'reminder' pills.
Precautions
Ortho Tri-Cyclen can harm an unborn baby or cause birth defects. Do not use birth control pills if you are pregnant or if you have recently had a baby. You should not take Ortho Tri-Cyclen if you have coronary artery disease, severe heart valve disorder, high blood pressure, a history of stroke or blood clot, circulation problems, a hormone-related cancer such as breast or uterine cancer, unusual vaginal bleeding, liver disease, migraine headaches, or a history of acrimony caused by pregnancy or birth control tablets. Do not smoke while using Ortho Tri-Cyclen, especially if you are older than 35.
Contraindications
You should not take Ortho Tri-Cyclen if you have: coronary artery illness, high blood pressure, circulation problems, a hormone-related cancer, liver disease or liver cancer, migraine headaches, or a history of jaundice caused by pregnancy or birth control tablets, heart disease, triglycerides, gallbladder disease or unusual vaginal bleeding, pregnant or have an allergy.
Possible side effect
Get emergency medical help if you have an allergic reaction, giddiness, disquiet, sickness, convulsion, vaginal bleeding. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.
Drug interaction
Antibiotics and anticonvulsants can make Ortho Tri-Cyclen less effective, which may result in pregnancy. The medicine can cooperate with henylbutazone, seizure medicines, topiramate, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, barbiturates, secobarbital, amobarbital, phenobarbital or HIV medications. Tell your doctor about all drugs you use.
Missed dose
Overdose
Call emergency medical attention if you think you have used too much of this medicine or drink glass of milk. Overdose symptoms may include disgust, retching or vaginal passage of blood.
