Aldara (Imiquimod)
General information
Active ingredient of Aldara cream is imiquimod which stimulates a local cell-mediated immune response inducing production of cytokines (interferon and interleukin-6) which are responsible for act6ive work of cells of immune system of the body like macrophages, T-lymphocytes and dendritic cells. These sells fight with cancer leading to causing protective reaction of the body like inflammation. When inflammation settles and destroys damaged cells, healthy new skin replaces cally lesions.
Directions
Apply Aldara on cleaned skin by clean hands only. Take one sachet and gently rub its content into the affected area with fingertips. Use once daily before bedtime. Do not apply near nose, mouth, ears, eyes. Take exactly as it was prescribed by your doctor. Usually for actinic keratoses use for 16 weeks twice per week. Treatment of basal carcinoma continues for six weeks by this schedule: five days then two days of rest follows. Genital warts are treated by this schedule: apply the cream three times per week, then two days of rest follow. It should be continued during 16 weeks.
Precautions
It is prescribed with caution to pregnant women. It is not know if this medication is excreted into breast milk. In patients which are treated with immunosuppressive medications this medicine should be used with caution.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity to the active substance or to any of excipients.
Possible side effects
You can experience the following adverse reactions: tenderness, itching, burning, redness (erythema) or pain at the site of application. Swelling, ulceration, thickened, peeling or crusting skin, scabbing at the place of application. Less common systemic side effects occur: skin color can change, headache, pain in back or muscles,tiredness, flu-like symptoms, swollen lymph nodes, diarrhoea.
Drug interaction
No interaction studies have been performed.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.
Overdose
If you consider that you took too much of this medication contact your doctor immediately.
Storage
Store your medicines at room temperature between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C). Store away from moisture and light. Keep it out of the reach of children and away from pets. Do not freeze the crea.
