General information
Suminat is used for the treatment of severe migraine headaches. The formula possesses an active ingredient called Sumatriptan which is a specific and selective agonist of 5-HT1-serotonin receptors localized in blood vessels of the brain. It works by narrowing the blood vessels in certain parts of the brain that are believed to cause migraine headaches. It is also aimed to reduce substances in the body that can trigger headache pain, nausea, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms.
Directions
Inject a dose of spray (20mg) up into one nostril at the first sign of a migraine attack. The second dose should be applied 2 hours after the first if the symptom of a migraine worsens.
Precautions
Notify your doctor if you have had a history of hyponatremia, repeated seizures or if you suffer from high blood pressure. This medication can be applied only in cases of cluster headache or acute migraines. Avoid using Suminat nasal spray to prevent any unusual migraines.
Contraindications
This medication is contraindicated in patients showing hypersensitivity to any ingredient of the formulation. This medicine should not be used in pregnant or breastfeeding women; patients with the history of myocardial infarction, basal, ophtalmoplegic, hemiplegic forms of migraine, ischemic heart disease, angina pectoris, hypertension, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, stroke or transient cerebrovascular accident, hepatic or renal insufficiency, epilepsy; infants and adolescents (younger than 18 y.o.), in patients older than 65 y.o. or patients that recently have used MAO inhibitors before taking this medication.
Possible side effect
Most common and short term side effects may include pain or tingling sensations in the body, unusual tiredness, nausea, vomiting, blood pressure changing, blurred vision. Allergic reactions also can occur involving wheezing, difficulty breathing, hay fever, urticaria, swelling, itching, skin redness. In some cases patients experienced more serious side effects including convulsions.
Drug interactions
In case you are not confident whether this medicinal product is compatible with other medicines or supplements, discuss it with your doctor or pharmacist. Notify your doctor if you are already receiving sumatriptan injection or taking almotriptan (Axert), eletriptan (Relpax), frovatriptan (Frova), naratriptan (Amerge), rizatriptan (Maxalt, Maxalt-MLT), or zolmitriptan (Zomig); or ergot medicine such as dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal), ergotamine (Ergomar, Cafergot, Migergot), dihydroergotamine (D.H.E. 45, Migranal), or methylergonovine (Methergine); antidepressants such as citalopram (Celexa), desvenlafaxine (Pristiq), duloxetine (Cymbalta), escitalopram (Lexapro), fluoxetine (Prozac, Sarafem), fluvoxamine (Luvox), paroxetine (Paxil), sertraline (Zoloft), or venlafaxine (Effexor).
Missed dose
This medication is used only when strongly needed, so you do not have to follow a certain schedule intake.
Overdose
If you think you overdosed the medicine, immediately contact your local poison center and notify your doctor or pharmacist. Signs of overdose may include convulsions, awkwardness in movements, palsy, clumsiness, redness in the arms and legs, sluggishness, tremor, irregular breathing, rapid pulse, dilated pupils.
Storage
It is recommended to store this medication away from sources of moisture and heat, and in a safe place, far from reach of children and pets. Store it at temperature of 2-30 C (36-86 F) in a tight container. Avoid keeping it in the bathroom.
