General information
Levothroid is prescribed for treatment of obesity, primary, secondary, tertiary hypothyroidism; subclinical hypothyroidism. Its main ingredient is levothyroxine sodium, a substance identical to the thyroid gland hormone.
Directions
It is recommended to take the medicine as it was prescribed by your doctor. It should be taken 30-60 minutes before breakfast with a glass of water. Do not stop treatment without your doctor's approve.
Precautions
Middle aged people, patient with adrenal insufficiency, cardiovascular disease should be careful taking the medicine.
Contraindications
Patients with acute myocardial infarction, thyrotoxicosis and uncorrected adrenal insufficiency can't use the medicine.
Possible side effect
Side effects can be the following: headache, insomnia, nervous or irritable feeling, hyperactivity, anxiety, emotional lability, fever, tachycardia, arrhythmias, hot flashes, sweating, changes in your menstrual periods, appetite changes, diarrhea, vomiting, weight changes, hair loss, flushing.
Drug interaction
Before starting you treatment tell your doctor about all the medicines you may take, especially about the following: calcium carbonate, sodium polystyrene sulfonate, ferrous sulfate iron supplement, sucralfate, antacids that contain aluminum, cholesterol-lowering drugs colestipol, cholestyramine, warfarin, digoxin, lithium, anti-thyroid agents, phenobarbital, rifamycins, estrogen products, diabetes medicines, amiodarone, iodide, beta blockers, antidepressants and growth hormones.
Missed dose
Take the missed dose as soon as possible. If it is almost time of the next intake just skip it and go back to your schedule.
Overdose
If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are heartbeat, chest pain, tremor, leg cramps, confusion and disorientation, shortness of breath, vomiting, diarrhea, or seizures.
Storage
Store the medicine at room temperature between 59-77 F (15-25 C) away from light and moisture, kids and pets.
