Levlen (Ethinyl Estradiol/levonorgestrel)

General information

Levlen is Ethinyl estradiol and levonorgestrel combination of female hormones that prevent ovulation. This medication also causes changes in your cervical mucus and uterine lining, making it harder for sperm to reach the uterus and harder for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. It used as contraception to prevent pregnancy.

Directions

You will take your first pill on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after your period begins. Go after your doctor's instructions. It is needed to use back-up birth control when you first start using this medication. Some 28-day birth control packs contain seven reminder pills to keep you on your regular cycle. It may occur breakthrough bleeding. Take one tablet every day at the same time. When the pills run out, start a new pack the next day. If you need to have any type of medical tests or surgery, break off using this medication for a short time.

Precautions

Do not use this medication if you have a history of stroke or blood clot, circulation problems , a hormone-related cancer, abnormal vaginal bleeding, liver illness, severe high blood pressure, migraine headaches, a heart valve disorder, or jaundice. Taking hormones can increase your risk of these sicknesses, especially if you smoke more than 35.

Contraindications

Don't use this drug if you are pregnant or those just after delivery, a stroke in history, circulation problems, vaginal bleeding, hormone-related cancer, liver illness, headaches, a heart valve disorder, severe high blood pressure or icterus.

Possible side effect

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction, asthenia, problems with eyes, headache, disorder, body pain, sickness,hyperhidrosis, depression, loss of appetite or icterus.

Drug interaction

Tell your doctor about all drugs you use, particularly antibiotics, theophylline, acetaminophen, ascorbic acid, prednisolone, seizure drugs, cyclosporine, a barbiturate sedatives and HIV or AIDS preparations. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for additional information.

Missed dose

Avoid missing a tablet as it may increase risk of becoming pregnant. If you forgot to use one pill, take two pills as soon as possible and then come back to your schedule. If you miss two in first or second week of cure, use two tablets daily for two days in series. Then come back to your schedule. If you omit two 'active' pills in series during third week, or three pills in a row during of the first three weeks, start a new pack of the tablets. If you passed two or more pills, you may not have a monthlies for this month. If you miss a period for two months in a row you might be pregnant. If you miss any reminder pills, throw the missed pills away and return to your schedule.

Overdose

If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. Overdose may cause retching, sickness and vaginal hemorrhage.

Storage

Store your medicines at room temperature between 20-25 C (68-77 F) away from moisture and light. Keep it out of the reach of children.
