Uniphyl Cr (Theophylline)

General information

Uniphyl Cr is an oral medication used to cause dilation of the bronchial tubes by relaxing a bronchial muscle. It is an effective bronchodilator used against chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases such as asthma, pulmonary emphysema, and bronchitis. It improves contraction of the major breathing muscle – diaphragm and decreases the response of the airways to irritants.

Directions

You need to consult a doctor regarding the appropriate dosage intake. Carefully follow all directions. Avoid exceeding your dose or taking the medication longer than it was advised. This medication is not chewed, crushed or broken while taking, so you must swallow it whole with a full glass of water or milk. Children from 6 to 16 years age use this medication provided the proper dosage is carefully calculated regarding the child's body weight.

Precautions

Notify all doctors, dentists and pharmacists you visit that you are taking this medication. In case you are about to start taking new medications, tell your doctor or pharmacist that you are already taking Uniphyl Cr. This medication is prescribed cautiously in case your anamnesis includes diabetes, underactive thyroid, hypertension, liver or kidney diseases (hepatitis or cirrhosis), and congestive heart failure. Do not consume alcohol as it may cause interaction with Uniphyl Cr. Be cautious in case you are about to start or stop smoking without having discussed that with your doctor. If you smoke, you are supposed to take a different Uniphyl dosage. Do not use this medication in case you are pregnant (plan to be pregnant) or breastfeeding a child. Follow your doctor's instructions about the type and amount of liquids, meals, food supplements and other medications you are allowed to take concurrently with this product. Avoid driving or doing anything that requires you to be alert as this medication can impair your reactions and ability to concentrate. Do not use this medication after the expiration date.

Contraindications

This medication is contraindicated in patients having suffered from coronary artery disease, peptic ulcers, and allergy to theophylline. Avoid taking Uniphyl Cr in case you are taking medications aimed to treat heartburn and peptic ulcers (cimetidine) or anticonvulsants used in epilepsy treatment (carbamazepine).

Possible side effect

You must immediately stop using this medication and look for emergency medical attention if you experience any severe side effects that include migraines, sleeping disorder (insomnia), restlessness, emesis, tremors, palpitations, epileptic attack (seizure), aggravation of your illness, acrimony and frequent urination. In case you suffer from less severe side effects that include allergic reactions (urticaria; face, throat, lips, tongue swelling) nausea, loss of appetite, weight loss, vertigo, somnolency, you must immediately contact your health care practitioner. This is not a complete list of all possible side effects. Others may occur in some patients and there may be some side effects not known yet. At any rate, notify your doctor or local poison centre at once if you experience any side effects that are bothersome for you.

Drug interactions

This medication is able to interact with a class of anticonvulsants, mood-stabilizing medications (carbamazepine) used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder; antidepressants that act as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (fluvoxamine); sympatholytic beta-blockers (propranolol) that treat hypertension, panic and anxiety; broad-spectrum medicines with antibacterial properties, fungicides, parasiticides (tiabendazole, enoxacin); bronchodilators and vasoconstrictive agents (ephedrine); a class of macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin); a class of bacterial antibiotics of the rifamycin group (rifampicin); histamine H2-receptor antagonists that inhibit the production of acid in the stomach (cimetidine); St. John’s wort.

Missed dose

In case you have missed your dose, take it as soon as you remember. If you see it is near the time for the next dose, skip taking the missed dose. Never increase the recommended dose. You can take the prescribed dose next day at the time you are used to take it on a regular basis.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose include epilepsy, restlessness, vomiting, tremors, palpitations, sleeping disorders. Epileptic attacks caused by Uniphyl Cr overdose may result in brain damaging or lethal outcome, so immediately contact your local poison center, notify your doctor or pharmacist if you suspect you have used too much of the medication.

Storage

Store this product away from sunlight, heat and moisture at room temperature between 59-77 C (or 15-25 F). Do not store it in the bathroom. Keep this product out of the reach of children and pets.
