Remeron (Mirtazapine)

General information

Remeron (mirtazapine) is a tetracyclic antidepressant. It affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression. It is thought to increase the activity of norepinephrine and serotonin which help elevate mood. Remeron is used to treat a certain type of depression called major depressive disorder.

Directions

Take Remeron exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not swallow the tablet whole. Allow it to dissolve in your mouth without chewing. Remeron is usually taken once a day at bedtime. The recommended starting dose is 15 mg. If necessary, your doctor may increase the dose up to 45 mg once a day. Changes in dose should not be made at intervals of less than 1 to 2 weeks.

Precautions

Do not use Remeron if you have taken an MAO inhibitors. Tell your doctor if you have seizures or epilepsy, liver or kidney disease, heart attack, bipolar disorder, low blood pressure. Tell your doctor if you have worsening depression or suicidal thoughts during the first several weeks of treatment. Drinking alcohol can increase certain side effects of Remeron. Mirtazapine may impair your thinking or reactions. Be careful if you drive or do anything that requires you to be alert.

Contraindications

You should not take Remeron if you are allergic to mirtazapine or if you are also taking tryptophan. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Possible side effect

Get emergency medical help if you have difficulty breathing, mood or behavior changes, hives, trouble sleeping, anxiety, panic attacks, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, fast heart rate, memory problems, weakness, headache. Less serious side effects include: weight gain, drowsiness, increased appetite, dizziness.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor if you are using: blood thinner (warfarin), tramadol, conivaptan, cimetidine, antibiotics (erythromycin, rifampin), antidepressants (citalopram, desipramine, nefazodone, sertraline), heart or blood pressure medication (nicardipine, quinidine), seizure medications (carbamazepine, phenytoin), HIV/AIDS medicine (delavirdine, indinavir), antifungal medications (ketoconazole, itraconazole). Consult your doctor or pharmacist for additional information.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdose

If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once. The overdose symptoms are fast heart rate, confusion, drowsiness, memory problems.

Storage

Store the medicine at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store the drugs in the bathroom. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets.
