Furacin (Nitrofurazone)

General information

Furacin is a topical antibacterial agent. It is used to treat burns that have become infected. It is also used to treat skin infections including pyodermas, infected dermatoses and infections of cuts, wounds, burns and ulcers. Furacin is also used to treat skin infections caused by skin grafts. It works by killing bacteria or preventing their growth.

Directions

Take the drug exactly as prescribed by your doctor. The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. The number of doses you take each day, the time allowed between doses, and the length of time you take the medicine depend on the medical problem for which you are using the medicine. Furacin may be applied directly to the skin or placed on a gauze pad that will cover the skin.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have any unusual allergic reaction to this medicine or any other medicines, if your burn or skin infection does not improve, or if it becomes worse.

Contraindications

Avoid using if you have an allergic reaction to the components of the drug, kidney disease, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Possible side effect

If you notice any side effects call your doctor for medical advice. Side effects may include: redness, rashes, itching in the affected area, allergic reactions.

Drug interactions

Tell your doctor if you are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter medicine, vitamins, minerals and herbal products. Discuss with your doctor the use of the medicine with food, alcohol, or tobacco.

Missed dose

Take the missed dose as soon as possible. Skip the missed dose if it is time for your next scheduled dose. Don't take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Overdose

If you think you have overdosed the medicine seek emergency medical help at once.

Storage

Store the medicine at room temperature away from light and moisture. Keep all drugs away from reach of children and pets. Store it in a tight container. Do not keep outdated medicine.
